New Brazil national team coach Carlo Ancelotti has acknowledged that Real Madrid forward Rodrygo remains in contention for a spot in his 2026 FIFA World Cup squad, despite the player’s recent absence from the Selecao.
Ancelotti Puts Rodrygo on Notice for Brazil’s World Cup Squad
The Italian manager emphasized that a comprehensive evaluation process is underway for approximately 70 players.
Ancelotti, who took charge of the five-time world champions in May, spoke about the 24-year-old during a press conference ahead of Brazil’s World Cup qualifiers.
“Obviously, memory counts. I know Rodrygo very well and I know he can contribute a lot to the team,” stated Ancelotti, referencing their successful time together at Real Madrid.
“We’re evaluating around 70 players, and we’re analyzing each one’s physical and tactical level to try to put together the most competitive team possible for the World Cup.”
This announcement comes at a pivotal time for Rodrygo, who has experienced a dip in form and playing time at club level.
He has started just one of Real Madrid’s first three La Liga games under new manager Xabi Alonso this season, totaling only 81 minutes on the pitch.
His limited involvement has reportedly led to frustration and earlier speculation about a potential transfer, though recent social media activity suggests his commitment to the Spanish giants.
The competition for places in Brazil’s attacking lineup is intense. While Rodrygo has been a part of the national team setup since 2019 and featured in the 2022 World Cup and 2024 Copa America, emerging talents are pushing hard for recognition.
Ancelotti’s comments make it clear that past achievements alone will not guarantee a ticket to North America in 2026.
With Brazil already qualified for the tournament, Ancelotti is using the current period to assess a wide pool of talent, prioritizing current physical condition and tactical understanding over reputation.
For Rodrygo, the path to securing his spot is clear: he must rediscover his best form and secure consistent minutes for his club to fuel his World Cup ambitions.
