Madrid-based club Atlético Madrid are weighing up a shock January transfer for Ferland Mendy, who currently finds himself down the pecking order at Real Madrid.

Real Madrid’s Mendy Could Be the Surprise Switch to Atlético Madrid

The 30-year-old left-back has yet to feature this season as he continues to recover from injury, and under new coach Xabi Alonso he appears to be third choice for the left-back position.

With limited opportunities and Real Madrid reportedly open to offers, Atlético view the scenario as a chance to strengthen the flank.

Diego Simeone and his back-room team are keen to bring in an experienced and dependable defender someone who brings both on-field composure and off-field leadership. Mendy fits that profile, especially given his track record at the top level.

The report by transfer outlet Fichajes, citing Nacional CAT, states that Atlético’s board have highlighted Mendy as a genuine recruitment target and are preparing a winter proposal.

That said, negotiating a deal between two fierce rivals in La Liga is never straightforward. Real Madrid may be reluctant to strengthen a direct competitor by selling one of its players.

Still, from Atlético’s perspective the timing appears favourable. Mendy’s current physical condition, his reduced role at Real Madrid and his contract situation all combine to make a move plausible if the price is right.

For Atlético, the addition could shore up a position of need ahead of the second half of the season.

Whether Real Madrid will sanction such a direct switch remains to be seen. For now, the concept of Mendy in red-and-white stripes is under serious consideration in Madrid’s transfer corridors.
