Portuguese giants Benfica have initiated negotiations with Real Madrid to sign Moroccan midfielder Brahim Diaz, according to reports from Portuguese outlet Record.

Benfica open talks with Real Madrid for Brahim Diaz

The Lisbon-based club identified the 26-year-old as their primary target after failing to secure Joao Felix, viewing him as an ideal creative reinforcement for their squad.

Benfica proposed a loan deal for Diaz, aiming to leverage their positive relationship with Madrid following recent transfers, including Alvaro Carreras’ €50 million move to the Spanish club this summer.

However, they face competition from Turkish side Fenerbahce and multiple Saudi Pro League clubs, all vying for the playmaker’s signature.

Despite Benfica’s interest, Diaz firmly intends to stay at Real Madrid. The midfielder is close to signing a new five-year contract and is determined to prove his worth under manager Xabi Alonso.

His commitment is reinforced by Alonso’s support, with the coach emphasizing Diaz’s value in the squad, especially during Jude Bellingham’s injury absence (Bellingham is sidelined until late October).

Real Madrid’s stance is unequivocal: they reject a loan or transfer. Club officials confirmed Diaz remains part of their plans and will not be released, despite Benfica’s promise of guaranteed playing time.

This resolve stems from Diaz’s versatility and contributions last season (56 appearances, 6 goals, 7 assists), which Alonso views as crucial for the upcoming campaign.

For now, the talks have reached an impasse. Benfica must explore alternatives unless Diaz unexpectedly reverses his position before the transfer window closes on September 1.
