At the 2025 CAF Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, Moroccan attacker Brahim Díaz earned the Puma Golden Boot. The Atlas Lions attacker, who also finished first in the AFCON 2025 qualifiers, demonstrated his impact by topping the scoring table while playing in front of home supporters.
Despite Morocco’s final loss, Díaz finished the tournament with five goals, more than any other player. He scored in every stage, starting against Comoros, scoring against Mali, and scoring twice against Zambia in the group round. In the Round of 16, the Real Madrid forward scored against Tanzania; in the quarterfinals, he scored against Cameroon.
Unfortunately, Diaz was unable to shower himself in glory during Sunday’s final after mishandling a late, contentious penalty that may have given the Atlas Lions the 2025 AFCON championship. Morocco has been waiting for a continental title since their victory fifty years ago, and this mistake has prolonged that wait.
Morocco’s Díaz Clinches Golden Boot Award
At the continental finals, Díaz set a new benchmark for Moroccan consistency. By scoring in five games, he was added to an exclusive AFCON list. Brahim Diaz was recently selected to get his Golden Boot. When FIFA president Gianni Infantino handed him the trophy, he appeared upset and appeared to have been sobbing.
He had absolutely no desire to be there. Nnamdi’s critique of this evening’s fiasco is excellent. Up until tonight’s final’s second-half stoppage time, the competition had been fantastic and had proceeded without the typical drama that characterises AFCON.
Unfortunately, the majority of viewers will only have watched the final’s closing moments; thus, they will have witnessed the mayhem of the past. Patrice Motsepe, the president of CAF, deserves a great deal of recognition for the manner in which he and his associates arranged this competition, but in the end, it will once again be known for its extraordinary controversy.
