Carlo Ancelotti believes Ronaldo's departure helped Karim Benzema

Karim Benzema has taken the leadership since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Frenchman has scored 41 goals this season and has helped Madrid crown their 35th La Liga trophy.

This has been by far his best season at Real Madrid and was instrumental in putting Real Madrid in the finals of the Champions League.

Since Ronaldo’s departure in 2018, Benzema has taken the leadership into his own hands and become more responsible for the team.

Ancelotti told SiriusXM FC: ‘I have difficulty calling Benzema only a centre-forward because he’s a fantastic player that’s playing from the front.’

‘I think Karim became a leader of the team when Ronaldo left because at that time he had more responsibility,’ he added.

‘Ronaldo was a player that was scoring around 50 goals a season and without him, Madrid had more difficulties to score goals.

‘Karim took on this responsibility and became more important for the team. But this squad has a lot of leaders.’
