When Kylian Mbappé worsened the ankle injury that had prevented him from exercising for the past week, Didier Deschamps revealed that a fantastic night for France swiftly took a turn for the worst.
Clutching the same ankle he hurt in Real Madrid’s 3-1 victory over Villarreal before joining France for the October international window, Mbappé tumbled down in agony with just over ten minutes remaining in Les Bleus’ match against Azerbaijan.
After receiving brief medical attention from the national team’s medical staff, the Frenchman gestured for Deschamps to be removed from the match. After limping off the pitch in the 83rd minute, Mbappé headed straight for the tunnel.
“He took another hit to the same ankle,” Deschamps remarked after the game. When he relaxes, the agony subsides. Contacts will unavoidably occur during a contest. We’ll evaluate it later. It is not ideal for him to be uncomfortable.
Real Madrid dealt injury blow as star striker limps off in France victory
The setback follows Deschamps’ claim that his captain had a small problem when he got to camp, which prevented him from training for the majority of the week. However, the France manager granted Mbappé the go-ahead against Azerbaijan after reassuring everyone that the injury was not a deal breaker.
The Real Madrid star put France on the scoreboard just before halftime with a spectacular goal that saw him dribble past six men to give his team the 3-0 victory, continuing his scoring run for both club and country.
Given his stellar start to the season, Mbappé’s injury now would come at an especially terrible time. Without him, France should be able to defeat Iceland, but Real Madrid is preparing for a challenging run that ends in October with games against Getafe, Juventus, and Barcelona.
Mbappe will now return to Madrid to start his recuperation and go through additional testing. Gonzalo Garcia and Rodrygo are anticipated to receive more playing time in the frontline if he is forced to miss any time with the Merengues. Vinicius Junior might get more minutes as well.
