Zinedine Zidane has officially begun his tenure as the head coach of the France national team, and his first squad announcement has generated significant discussion.

Zidane explains Tchouameni’s absence from first France squad

The legendary former Real Madrid manager, who took over from Didier Deschamps after the 2026 World Cup, has chosen a 23-man roster for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures.

While the list features Real Madrid stars Kylian Mbappe, Ibrahima Konate, and Eduardo Camavinga, one notable absentee is midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni.

Zidane addressed the media following the announcement and clarified his decision to leave the defensive midfielder out.

The coach emphasized that Tchouameni requires a continuous period of recovery in Madrid rather than the physical strain of international fixtures.

“He is a player who was sidelined for two months,” Zidane stated on RMC Sport.

“For his recovery process, it was better for him to stay in Madrid.”

Tchouameni has endured a difficult start to the campaign after returning from the World Cup with an injury.

He missed the entirety of pre-season training under Jose Mourinho and only recently returned to action.

The midfielder has been carefully rebuilding his match fitness, making substitute appearances against Inter Milan and Rayo Vallecano before earning his first start of the season against Elche.

Zidane explained that sparing Tchouameni from international duty allows him to focus entirely on reaching peak physical condition.

In addition to discussing Tchouameni, Zidane confirmed that Kylian Mbappe will retain the captain’s armband.

When asked about Mbappe’s defensive contributions, Zidane dismissed the criticism as a “bogus debate,” asserting that the forward will work hard for the team.

Furthermore, Zidane revealed his tactical preference for the superstar, stating, “I really like him on the left,” despite Mbappe’s ability to play across the front line.

France now prepares for four crucial Nations League matches over the next three weeks.

Zidane’s squad selection demonstrates a pragmatic approach, prioritizing player welfare and long-term fitness as he begins his new era with Les Bleus.
