Real Madrid’s team for Wednesday’s Copa del Rey matchup against Real Sociedad did not feature Kylian Mbappe. The France star did not entirely recover from a tooth issue and was left out of the traveling team for the encounter, despite Carlo Ancelotti’s announcement on Tuesday that Mbappe would be eligible for the first leg of the semifinals in Basque Country.
Regular starters Thibaut Courtois and Federico Valverde were both left off, as Ancelotti plans to rest them. According to Spanish media, Mbappe missed practice on Tuesday due to having a tooth extracted.
In the Champions League playoffs, Mbappe has scored six goals in his last five games across all competitions, including a hat-trick against Manchester City in the return.
Kylian Mbappe hands Real Madrid Copa Del Rey blow
On Tuesday, Ancelotti made the first assertion that Mbappé will fly tomorrow. He couldn’t train today due to a dental issue, but he will travel tomorrow, and everyone who travels gets to play.
However, a number of media outlets, including transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, confirmed the cause for his exclusion. “Kylian Mbappé will miss Real Madrid’s match against Real Sociedad after feeling ill overnight after having his tooth extracted,” he wrote in a post on X. Fede Valverde and Thibaut Courtois will also be rested and absent.
Mbappe has 14 goals in 2025, which puts him in excellent form for Los Blancos. He has scored seven goals in ten Champions League games, including a hat-trick against Manchester City last week, and 17 goals in 23 La Liga games. After breaking his nose at last summer’s Euro 2024, he has so far in his stay at Madrid been largely injury-free.
