La Liga released a statement following the racist abuse of Vinicius Junior by Atletico Madrid supporters.

Real Madrid won 2-1 in the Madrid derby to secure their spot in the top of the La Liga table.

Before the match, Atletico Madrid fans were filmed singing racist songs about Vinicius while also being subjected to monkey chants during the game.

La Liga will study the audio and video evidence before filing a report to Spain’s Commission.

But only a fine is expected, and stadium closure seems unlikely.

La Liga can prosecute individuals through the courts, as they have done in previous cases.

“We denounce all incidents inside and outside stadiums,” said a La Liga spokesperson.

“We work with clubs to keep our football friendly and enjoyable.”

The spokesperson added: “Hate speech has no place in La Liga and we always work with the clubs and the authorities to identify and bring to justice any such case.”
