Real Madrid have officially announced the departure of Brazilian midfielder Reinier Jesus, who has joined Atlético Mineiro as a free agent.
Reinier Leaves Real Madrid After Five Years Without a First-Team Appearance
Despite having one year left on his contract, the LaLiga club facilitated his exit, ending his four-and-a-half-year stint without a single first-team appearance.
Reinier, 23, signed a long-term deal with Atletico Mineiro that runs until December 2029. As part of the agreement, Real Madrid will retain a 50% sell-on clause for any future transfer.
The midfielder arrived at Madrid in January 2020 from Flamengo in a €30 million deal, but his time at the club was marked by unsuccessful loan spells at Borussia Dortmund, Girona, Frosinone, and Granada.
Once a highly rated prospect, Reinier struggled to make an impact in Europe. Last season, he made 25 appearances for Granada in the Spanish second division, scoring once and providing four assists.
Despite early promise including winning the Brazilian league and Copa Libertadores with Flamengo in 2019 he failed to break into Madrid’s star-studded squad.
After arriving in Belo Horizonte, Reinier expressed his relief at finding a new home. “I was searching for happiness,” he told reporters. “I spent five years on loan and wasn’t happy.
Now, I feel the affection I missed before. I’m ready to give everything for this shirt.”
Atlético Mineiro will hope Reinier rediscovers the form that once made him one of Brazil’s brightest talents.
For Real Madrid, his departure closes a chapter on a transfer that never lived up to expectations.
