According to reports, Real Madrid and Benfica are nearing an agreement to transfer Álvaro Carreras to the Spanish capital. Real Madrid is concentrating on strengthening their defense this summer after making no acquisitions during the winter transfer window. The team is getting close to adding a significant left-back reinforcement after already signing Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen.
The Spanish powerhouses are finalizing the details of Carreras’ move from Benfica, according to MARCA. Real Madrid is apparently certain they will have the fullback wearing a white shirt in time for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, despite “arduous” discussions.
According to the Spanish publication, in order to complete the transaction, Real Madrid agreed to pay Carreras’ €50 million ($57 million) release clause in full. In the meantime, the 22-year-old is “awaiting the transfer agreement” in Lisbon and has “expressed his desire” to join Xabi Alonso’s squad.
Xabi Alonso closing in on another Real Madrid signing
According to the source, Benfica has set the price at €48 million, which is slightly less than the player’s €50 million release clause, while Real Madrid has offered €40 million to sign Carreras.
Carreras would be able to play for Real Madrid in the Club World Cup in addition to receiving his transfer for that sum. Interestingly, Benfica is also competing in the event, which is another reason why the operation is almost finished but not yet done.
Because time is running out, Real Madrid has accelerated in recent days. The deadline to register new players for the Club World Cup through the emergency transfer window, which opened on June 1st, is June 10th.
Since the player and the club came to a personal accord, there has been hope. Carreras had stated his desire to rejoin Real Madrid from the beginning.
The €50 million clause in Carreras’ contract has been the target of the Merengues’ efforts to cut it. The entire package has been lowered to €48 million thus far. Although it is not yet finalized, it is a positive step. As the last sprint for his signing progresses, Carreras stays dedicated and unfazed by the commotion.
