The statement released by the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) said: “Thibaut Courtois underwent a medical examination this afternoon by the RBFA medical staff.
He will not be available for the upcoming international matches and will return to his club for further treatment.”
Courtois’ withdrawal comes after he sustained a new injury setback during Real Madrid’s 0-0 draw against Rayo Vallecano last weekend.
The 32-year-old picked up a problem in his right leg, which was later identified by Real Madrid as “an injury to the long abductor muscle.”
Despite Madrid’s initial diagnosis, Belgium’s medical team carried out their own assessment to confirm the extent of the issue before deciding to send the goalkeeper home.
This marks another frustrating blow for Courtois, who only recently returned from a lengthy absence due to a knee injury that kept him out for much of 2024.
His latest muscle concern now puts his immediate availability in doubt, although early reports suggest the problem is not considered serious.
Real Madrid will now oversee Courtois’ recovery process in the Spanish capital.
The club’s medical staff are hopeful that the experienced shot-stopper will regain fitness in time for their upcoming La Liga fixture against Elche on November 23rd.
Courtois’ absence will likely see Belgium rely on backup options for their upcoming international games, while Real Madrid will be monitoring his condition closely to ensure he returns fully fit.
With crucial domestic and European fixtures approaching, Los Blancos will be eager to avoid any further injury complications for their first-choice goalkeeper.
