Following their defeat by fierce rivals Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup, Real Madrid fired manager Xabi Alonso. After a very successful stint with German team Bayern Leverkusen, the Spaniard was only named Carlo Ancelotti’s replacement in the summer.
However, after a disastrous season in which Real Madrid lost 3-2 to the Catalans in the Spanish Super Cup and trailed Barcelona in the league, Real Madrid has opted to fire Alonso after just eight months of a three-year contract.
Real Madrid C. F. wants to inform that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been agreed to end his tenure as first-team coach, according to a statement from the club.
Because he is a Real Madrid great and has always embodied the club’s ideals, Xabi Alonso will always be loved and admired by all Madridistas. His home will always be Real Madrid.
Xabi Alonso leaves club by mutual consent
At the halfway point of the season, Alonso leaves Real Madrid behind rivals Barcelona by four points in the La Liga standings. Alvaro Arbeloa, another former Liverpool player, has taken his position. Arbeloa has spent the previous six years working with the academy and has been the coach of Real Madrid’s B squad since June.
Because he is a Real Madrid great and has always embodied the club’s ideals, Xabi Alonso will always have the love and respect of all Madrid supporters, according to a statement. His home will always be Real Madrid.
In May, he signed a three-year contract to take over for Carlo Ancelotti, who departed the team to become head coach of Brazil. When Jurgen Klopp declared he would leave Anfield in 2024, Alonso was previously connected to the Liverpool position; nevertheless, he chose to remain at Leverkusen for an additional season before transferring to Madrid.
His six-game winning streak at the Bernabeu Stadium culminated with a 2-1 victory against Barcelona at home in October. However, Real only won two of their following eight games across all competitions.
