Real Madrid have officially set their sights on Arsenal defender William Saliba, making a discreet approach for the French international ahead of the summer transfer window.
Real Madrid Open Talks for Arsenal Defender William Saliba
According to reports from Spain, Saliba is now Los Blancos’ primary defensive target, with club president Florentino Pérez personally involved in the effort to secure his signature.
Saliba, who joined Arsenal from Saint-Étienne in 2019 for £27 million, has developed into one of the Premier League’s most commanding centre-backs under Mikel Arteta.
His performances have not only cemented his place in the Arsenal backline but also earned him a regular spot in the French national team.
Despite his importance to the team, Real Madrid believe Saliba could be tempted by the opportunity to join one of Europe’s most successful clubs.
With long-term injuries to key defenders and a transition looming in the squad, Madrid see Saliba as a vital piece of their next-generation rebuild.
The reigning Champions League holders are already on course to sign Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer, but strengthening the centre of defence remains a top priority.
Arsenal, however, have no intention of parting ways with the 23-year-old and are said to be fully aware of Madrid’s interest.
The club considers Saliba untouchable and a cornerstone of their project going forward. Saliba is under contract until 2027 and has recently reaffirmed his desire to win trophies with the Gunners.
Should Real Madrid fail to land Saliba, they have identified Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen and Manchester City’s Manuel Akanji as alternatives.
But for now, the Spanish giants remain focused on prising the Frenchman away from North London — a move that would require not just money, but serious persuasion.
