Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso is personally urging the club’s board to sign Elche’s young defensive midfielder Rodrigo Mendoza.
Alonso pushes Real Madrid to secure rising star Rodrigo Mendoza
Despite a busy summer that saw new arrivals like Franco Mastantuono and Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alonso did not get the defensive midfield reinforcement he repeatedly requested. Now, he sees Mendoza as the ideal solution.
According to Defensa Central, Alonso has been advocating for Mendoza to President Florentino Perez for some time.
He has even described the 20-year-old as the new Zubimendi, a reference to the primary target, Martin Zubimendi, whom Madrid failed to sign.
Alonso has made it clear that he dreams of bringing Mendoza to the Santiago Bernabeu for the next season and has asked the administration to move quickly.
Rodrigo Mendoza is no unknown talent. Real Madrid’s chief scout, Juni Calafat, has had the player on his radar for a significant period.
At just 20, Mendoza has become a essential player for Elche and a regular for the Spain U-20 national team, showcasing his composure and quality in a deep-lying role.
However, Real Madrid face stiff competition. Top European clubs, including Premier League sides Manchester City and Arsenal, are seriously studying a move for him.
Serie A giants Juventus, AC Milan, and Inter Milan have also registered interest. Mendoza’s recent contract extension until 2028, which includes a €20 million release clause, complicates any potential transfer.
While his market value has skyrocketed, this clause remains a manageable figure for Los Blancos.
All eyes will be on Mendoza this weekend when Real Madrid faces Elche. For Alonso and the Madrid hierarchy, the match will serve as a direct audition for the midfield star they hope will finally solidify their engine room.
