According to Liverpool, they have accepted an offer from Real Madrid to let Trent Alexander-Arnold join the Spanish powerhouses ahead of schedule. Over the past year, Alexander-Arnold has been frequently associated with Real Madrid, as the right-back has been identified as their top target as they seek to replace Spain international Dani Carvajal.

This season began with the England international entering the last year of his contract, and given Real Madrid’s interest, it was inevitable that he would depart his boyhood club. It was confirmed before the 2024–2025 season ended that Alexander-Arnold would be leaving Liverpool for Real Madrid, a move that had been imminent for months.

His transfer to Real Madrid had not yet been made public because Xabi Alonso’s team was negotiating an early release with Liverpool so he could play in the Club World Cup next month. However, Liverpool said in a club statement on Friday morning that they had accepted an offer from Real Madrid for Alexander-Arnold.

Liverpool allow Trent Alexander to join Real Madrid early in £10m deal

In an agreement valued at £10 million for the Premier League winners, Liverpool has consented to allow Trent Alexander-Arnold to join Real Madrid when the transfer window opens on Sunday.

Madrid and Liverpool resumed negotiations this week to sign the defender for the Club World Cup, which begins on June 14. His contract with Liverpool is set to expire on June 30. The Spanish powerhouses had originally offered him an early signing deal for £850,000. They turned that down.

An agreement has already been reached, though, whereby Real would pay Liverpool a one-time €10 million fee to terminate the fullback’s contract 29 days early. Additionally, they will pay Alexander-Arnold’s June salary. This indicates that Liverpool will receive £10 million for the entire agreement. On Sunday, the defender’s registration will be changed to Madrid.

Liverpool may have saved £20 million for the domestic defender if they had agreed to Real Madrid’s initial offer in late December. However, the team’s quest for the championship under Arne Slot was given top priority by the club, and Alexander-Arnold was crucial to the mission’s success.
