Real Madrid have taken the first step toward landing Liverpool centre‑back Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer next summer.
Madrid Make Initial Contact with Konate’s Camp Ahead of 2026 Free Transfer
Spanish outlet Fichajes report that Madrid have opened talks with his representatives as early approaches, believing little progress is being made on his contract renewal at Anfield.
The club view Konate as a “world‑class” defender and a top target as they seek to rebuild under new coach Xabi Alonso.
With his Liverpool deal expiring in June 2026, Madrid plan to follow the same playbook used to sign Trent Alexander‑Arnold: wait to sign Konate on a free, provided he does not commit to fresh terms.
His current negotiations with Liverpool are reportedly stalled and the club fears a repeat free‑agent loss situation.
Real Madrid reportedly refuse Liverpool’s €50 million valuation and are not prepared to pay what Liverpool wants this summer.
While Liverpool are open to selling now if necessary, Madrid would only offer up to €20‑25 million a figure the Premier League side may reject in favour of holding onto Konate until his contract expires.
Coach Xabi Alonso, who has already approved Konate as a defensive reinforcement, is believed to be pushing for his arrival, especially given ongoing doubts over Real’s current options: Antonio Rudiger, David Alaba, and Eder Militao.
Madrid have already bolstered their back line with signings including Dean Huijsen, Alvaro Carreras, and Alexander‑Arnold, which has reached La Liga’s squad limit.
They see Konate as the ideal complement in their three‑man defence system, with plans to formalize a deal in January if renewal talks break down.
For now, the ball is in Liverpool’s court. If Konate resists extension, Real Madrid stand ready to make their move in January, aiming to secure a world‑class centre‑back without paying a transfer fee.
