Real Madrid are considering bringing back Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga as a backup option for Thibaut Courtois, should current second-choice keeper Andriy Lunin depart this summer.

Real Madrid Weighing Kepa Move as Potential Lunin Replacement

Kepa, who joined Chelsea in 2018 for a record £72 million from Athletic Bilbao, had a challenging tenure at Stamford Bridge.

He spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Real Madrid, making 20 appearances and contributing to their La Liga and UEFA Champions League triumphs.

Following that, he secured another loan move to AFC Bournemouth for the 2024/25 season, where he has rediscovered his form under manager Andoni Iraola.

Kepa credits Iraola for revitalizing his passion for football, stating, “I needed to feel important and enjoy football again.”

Meanwhile, Lunin has extended his contract with Real Madrid until 2030. However, the agreement allows flexibility for both parties to explore other options if necessary.

Lunin remains open to offers, acknowledging the competition with Courtois and the uncertainties surrounding his future at the club.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has expressed admiration for Kepa, stating, “We love him. We love him.”

This sentiment, coupled with Lunin’s potential departure, positions Kepa as a viable candidate to return to the Santiago Bernabéu as Courtois’s understudy.

Kepa’s current loan at Bournemouth has been marked by impressive performances, with 25 appearances and a significant role in the team’s ascent to 10th place in the Premier League.

His resurgence has even sparked discussions about a permanent move to Bournemouth before his Chelsea contract expires in 2026.

As the summer transfer window approaches, Real Madrid’s goalkeeping situation remains fluid.

Should Lunin seek opportunities elsewhere, Kepa’s familiarity with the club and renewed confidence could make him an ideal backup for Courtois.

For Kepa, a return to Madrid would offer a chance to continue competing at the highest level and further reestablish himself among Europe’s elite goalkeepers.
