Real Madrid’s hierarchy has internally discussed Aston Villa manager Unai Emery as a potential candidate should they seek a new coach this summer.
Inside Real Madrid’s Manager Search: Unai Emery on Shortlist for Summer
This comes amid early scrutiny of current boss Álvaro Arbeloa’s turbulent start. The club promoted Arbeloa from within its ranks earlier this month after dismissing Xabi Alonso.
However, his tenure has begun poorly, featuring a Copa del Rey exit and a failure to secure a top-eight finish in the UEFA Champions League group stage, which forces the team into an extra playoff round.
According to reliable sources, including transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano, the Real Madrid board is not actively pursuing a mid-season change and intends to give Arbeloa time.
Yet, they are assessing future options. The name of Unai Emery, 54, has emerged in these internal conversations as a credible alternative.
Emery has significantly elevated Aston Villa’s standing during his three-year spell in the Premier League.
His extensive experience, including successful periods at Spanish clubs Valencia and Villarreal, along with stints at Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal, makes him an attractive profile. Jurgen Klopp’s name has also reportedly surfaced in these discussions.
No formal talks have occurred with Emery, who remains fully committed to Aston Villa and holds a contract until 2029.
The Spanish manager is currently focused on securing a strong season finale for his club.
Real Madrid’s leadership is reportedly furious with the recent Champions League defeat to Benfica, which precipitated this early season crisis.
While the immediate plan is stability, the club is clearly preparing contingency strategies, with Emery now a recognized option on their shortlist for the summer.
