Real Madrid have confirmed that veteran defender David Alaba will now miss approximately a month due to a newly sustained muscle injury, dealing a heavy blow to the squad during their Club World Cup campaign.
David Alaba suffers fresh muscle setback — out for around a month
Following a meniscus surgery in April, Alaba had only just returned to light training.
But medical tests conducted by the club’s medical department detected a soleus muscle injury in his left calf, ending his participation in the tournament and sidelining him for at least three to four weeks.
Coach Xabi Alonso confirmed, “David is taking a bit longer [to recover]… After the operation we need to be cautious and patient,” adding that Alaba will not feature in upcoming matches in Miami.
This setback is simply the latest in a long chain of fitness issues for the 33‑year‑old central defender. Since suffering a torn ACL in December 2023, Alaba’s season has been plagued by surgeries and rehabilitation.
Before that, he missed over 12 months of competitive action, and before this new injury, he had only totaled 599 minutes in 14 appearances.
Alaba’s absence comes at a critical time. With Real Madrid’s senior defensive roster already stretched, the team must turn to fresh faces like new signing Deal Huijsen and rely on regulars such as Eder Militao.
Xabi Alonso’s backline depth will be tested as the Club World Cup progresses and pre-season approaches.
Alaba will stay in the United States with the squad to begin rehab and full recovery under medical supervision.
His return timeline likely points toward late July or early August, coinciding with the start of La Liga’s pre-season. However, any new developments could delay his return further.
