Andriy Lunin, the custodian for Real Madrid, was one of the opponents in his team’s 2-4 loss to Girona
Thibaut Courtois, 24, was passed over after it was reported that he was unable to join the team due to gastroenteritis. In actuality, Lunin conceded up to four goals, all of which were scored by Valentn Castellanos. Not that the Ukrainian was the only one at fault. Girona was essentially given the red carpet by the Real Madrid defence when they entered the pitch.
Even more concerning is the fact that only five of Girona’s 13 total shots on goal that evening, with four of them finding the back of the net, were on target. Lunin was not even close to save those shots, to be honest.
Despite the fact that his current contract with Real Madrid goes through 2024, the 24-year-old’s performance aroused concerns about his consistency there, and a recent report from Mundo Deportivo suggests that he may depart the club this summer. It’s interesting to note that Lunin nearly left Madrid even last summer before deciding to stay.
Courtois has only made 12 appearances across all competitions this season due to injuries, but given his performances, particularly against Girona, the management may be forced to make a tough choice. The assertion from MD is entirely consistent with what we published earlier today. Lunin wishes to extend his contract despite having an uncertain future, but it turns out that the club’s coaching staff has concerns about his talents.
The management believes that despite being guided through his areas of weakness, the player has not improved in several areas. Now that Courtois is present, Lunin will not be able to make improvements despite the fact that he is liked in the locker room and is conscious of his faults. Given his contract position and the coaches’ scepticism, a summer departure might actually happen.
