6. Liverpool 4-0 Real Madrid (2008/09 Champions League Round-of-16)

Real Madrid’s defeat against Liverpool in the Champions League was not less than a heartbreak for fans. Both sides faced each other in the round-of-16 fixture of the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League.

It was the second-leg game and pressure was on Real Madrid to overturn the 1-0 defeat they had suffered at home in the first leg. Whites travelled to Anfield and Liverpool knocked them out of the competition. Fernando Torres and Steven Gerard, and Dossena scored for Liverpool with Gerard netting twice. It was the most humiliating defeat for the Reds in Champions League history. 

5. Barcelona 6-2 Real Madrid (2008/09 La Liga)

Real Madrid suffered the heaviest defeat against Barcelona in El Classico history. They conceded six goals in El Classico which is their poorest defensive record against Barca. Definitely, one of the biggest Real Madrid losses in recent times that fans will try to live down.

On 2 May 2009, the two Spanish rivals went against each other in another El Clasico and Barcelona hammered Los Blancos 6-2. Higuain and Ramos scored the goals for Real Madrid. Meanwhile, Thierry Henry and Lionel Messi scored a brace for Barcelona with Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique also opening the scoring with one goal each. 

4. Barcelona 5-0 Real Madrid (La Liga 2010-11)

Real Madrid faced one of their biggest El Classico defeats in La Liga season 2010-11. Real Madrid and Barcelona are known for their rich rival history. Los Blancos have an edge over Barca in El Classico history but on that night, it went out in a very disappointing match for the Madridistas. It was one of the most embarrassing performances in the club’s history because it came against Barcelona. 

Two teams were playing under the supervision of two of the best coaches in the world, Guardiola and Mourinho, at Camp Nou. Real Madrid were unbeaten from the last seven matches before reaching Camp Nou. It was unexpected to see Whites performing like this after such a winning streak. Xavi opened the scoring, with Pedro, David Villa, and Jefferson making it 5-0 for the home side. This loss was the worst defeat of Mourinho’s career in management.

3. Valencia 6-0 Real Madrid (1930–31 La Liga) 

It was Real Madrid’s second-biggest defeat as they already saw a defeat one season earlier. Back in 1930-31 La Liga, Real Madrid secured a disappointing loss against Athletic Bilbao. The worst thing is it was the home defeat. Till today, it is Real Madrid’s biggest defeat at home in any competition. 

Gorostiza, Chirri, Iraragorri, Bata, Iraragorri, and Lafuente scored for the Bilbao. Whites didn’t even open the scoring and conceded a clean-sheet. 

2. Valencia 6-0 Real Madrid (1999 Copa del Rey semifinal) 

Real Madrid suffered a heartbreaking loss and it saw them exit the Copa Del Rey. It was the semifinal game of the competition. Back on June 9th, 1999, Valencia surprised them with a 6-0 victory in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semifinal, at Mestalla.

This was Valencia’s biggest ever victory over the Whites. They scored six times against Real Madrid and also kept a clean sheet. They were on top of the gap from the very beginning. Valencia scored four goals in the first half and two more during the second half. Claudio López, Alain Roche, Goran Vlaovic, and Alain Roche scored the first four goals in the first half. Miguel Ángel Angulo and Gaizka Mendieta scored during the second half.

1. Espanyol 8-1 Real Madrid (La Liga 1929-30) 

It is remembered as the biggest Real Madrid loss in history. Real Madrid’s 8-1 defeat against Espanyol, back in La Liga 1929–30 was their heaviest defeat.

The match was held on March 4, 1930, in the Primera Division and was over with a suffering 8-1 loss for the Vikings. It also set the record for the Whites League and away defeat. Gallart, Solé, Padrón, Bosch, Ventolrà, and Álamo scored for the the Espanyol. Rubio was the only scorer for Real Madrid.

Ajax 4-1 Real Madrid ( 2019 Champions League)

It was the most recent defeat in our list of biggest Real Madrid losses. Ajax defeated the most-time Champions League winner in March 2019. The worst thing is the defeat came at Real Madrid’s home. It became the worst European loss at home in Real Madrid’s long history. 

Meanwhile, Los Blancos had their chances in the game but they couldn’t grab the opportunity. Ajax gave them a surprise package with each goal.  The Dutch club secured their best away win against the Spanish club with a 4-1 win. Hakim Ziyech, David Neres, Dusan Tadic, and Lasse Schone were the goal-scorers for the Netherlands club. Marco Asensio netted the only goal for the hosts.
