Real Madrid eyes return of Mario Gila in January transfer window

Real Madrid is actively pursuing the loan return of 23-year-old Spanish center-back Mario Gila, who is now at Serie A club Lazio, in the upcoming January transfer window. According to SER Deportivos, Real Madrid is considering Gila as a major option for defensive additions.

Gila has progressed in his career despite limited playing time after joining Lazio from Real Madrid in July 2022. Gila struggled to obtain a continuous first-team position during his stay at Real Madrid’s La Fabrica division, where he progressed through the youth ranks. Meanwhile, his move to Lazio saw him acquire crucial experience, with 20 games in the last 18 months, including eight this season.

Injuries to key players have increased Real Madrid’s need for a center-back, leaving Carlo Ancelotti with only two healthy choices. Following David Alaba’s long-term knee injury and Eder Militao’s similar failure, the club has begun to look for defense reinforcements, with Gila showing as a realistic option.

While Real Madrid is interested in other defenders such as Robert Renan, the club will likely incorporate a purchase option clause in their loan request for Gila. The result is dependent on Lazio’s willingness to consider a loan deal in the January window, leaving the question of whether Gila would return to his origins next month.
