In response to rumours that he would step down from his role with Croatia, Luka Modric claims he has already decided on his international future

The 37-year-old’s most recent opportunity to guide his nation to their first major trophy passed over on Sunday night as they were defeated on penalties in the Nations League final.

Dani Carvajal’s game-winning penalty strike gave Spain the victory after Modric had converted his own penalty but Unai Simon had stopped Lovro Majer and Bruno Petkovic’s tries.

The seasoned Real Madrid player Modric will be getting close to his 39th birthday at the Euros the following summer, which may be his final competition given that his contract at the Bernabeu also expires in the summer of 2024.

He informed reporters, “I’ve selected my future. “The decision is very obvious to me, but I won’t say or make an announcement today.”

Both the 2018 World Cup and the Nations League finals this summer were won by Croatia under Modric, although the little European nation also placed third at the most recent World Cup in Qatar. The club’s next Euro 2024 qualifying matches are against Latvia and Armenia in September, giving the former Tottenham player at least a few weeks to decide whether or not to stay on the team.
