New signee Next season, Fran Garcia will be Real Madrid’s first-choice left-back

The 23-year-old, who joined Real Madrid in 2013, was brought back in June, becoming the club’s first signing of the summer.

The teenage full-back was anticipated to be the understudy, but after Ferland Mendy’s poor performance, he is now Carlo Ancelotti’s first choice. Garcia’s selection as the first choice follows his outstanding season at Rayo Vallecano in 2022/23. Furthermore, Mendy’s future is unknown following his poor performance last season.

While Real Madrid wants to sell him, Ancelotti is opposed to the idea. The Italian had to rely heavily on Eduardo Camavinga’s adaptability, and while the Frenchman delivered a steady performance, he does not want to stay in the position, and neither does the club. Mendy, for his part, is eager to stay and compete for a spot in the first team. If it is accomplished, he will seek to extend his stay because his current contract expires in 2025.

Ancelotti would want choices in any given situation, and Garcia’s purchase is merely the frosting on the cake. At the moment, much will be determined by how the youthful full-back performs on the pre-season tour. It will set the tone for how things will go for him once the campaign gets underway.

Mendy will have something to fight for now that Garcia has arrived. Last season, he believed he was the unbeatable choice, but if Garcia can reproduce his Rayo Vallecano form, Mendy’s long-term position will be jeopardised.
