Real Madrid has been widely linked with a bid for Kylian Mbappe in recent weeks

It comes after the French international announced his intention to quit PSG as a free agent next summer.

Mbappe agreed to a two-year contract extension with the option of a third in 2022. He has declared, however, that he has no intention of exercising his option, which means he is free to sign a pre-contract agreement with a new club in January.

Real Madrid is willing to wait until then to come to an agreement that would allow Mbappe to join on a free transfer the following summer. PSG, though, is adamant that they won’t give up their prized possession, and their Chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi told Le Parisien (via Fabrizio Romano) that if Mbappe doesn’t agree to a new contract by the end of the summer, they will consider selling him.

“Kylian Mbappe needs to make a decision either in a week or two. Just this much. The door is open if he chooses not to consent to a new contract. No player, not even me, is larger than the club. It’s really obvious.

Real Madrid had been quite content to hold off on signing Mbappe until the next season. However, given that PSG has shown a desire to sell him this summer, it’s possible that they may have to make a big investment to acquire him.
