For the first time this year, Ferland Mendy is anticipated to start for Real Madrid when they take on Las Palmas on Wednesday in La Liga
Mendy has had a challenging year because he has been in and out of the team owing to recurrent injury issues. The Frenchman, who saw very little action in the second half of the previous season, suffered an injury again during the preseason, keeping him out of action until this point.
On Sunday during the Madrid derby, the 28-year-old made his La Liga comeback by taking Fran Garcia’s place a few minutes before the hour mark. The left-back’s late challenge on Marcos Llorente earned him a yellow card just ten minutes later. Mendy’s future at Real Madrid is in doubt, as is widely known. Madrid will consider hiring Alphonso Davies in the summer of 2024 after the 28-year-old failed to persuade Carlo Ancelotti that he could be a reliable left-back.
Even if the Frenchman’s situation may appear hopeless, he is the only one who has the power to change it. He had been sidelined by injury for far too long before playing against Atletico on Sunday. And now that he is fully healthy and Madrid has a busy schedule of games, it could be a wonderful opportunity for him to establish his value.
The ideal opportunity for him to establish his dominance is during a home match against Las Palmas, a squad that is typically predicted to sit deep and rely on counterattacks. It is currently difficult to envision Mendy staying at Real Madrid past this season. The 28-year-old hasn’t done enough to win over the board, and as was previously reported, he looks like he’ll be leaving at the end of the year. Mendy’s current contract is valid until 2025, and as Real Madrid will almost certainly choose Davies over Mendy in the summer of 2019, Mendy’s career is already done.
The 28-year-old will be compelled, one way or another, to investigate market opportunities. But for now, should he actually start in place of Fran Garcia against Las Palmas, the former Olympique Lyon star would be looking to make the most of his opportunity.
