Arsene Wenger has called for Karim Benzema to be reinstated in the French national team.
The European Championships are coming up and the Real Madrid forward is in a rich vein of form once again this season.
He has scored 28 times in 2020/21 and is leading This Galacticos team through a stiff title battle and in Europe. Benzema’s last appearance for his country, however, was in 2015. After his exile due to disciplinary measures, Didier Deschamps has never recalled him.
“The non-call up of Benzema is not dependent on the quality of the player,” Wenger said. “For me, Benzema deserves 100% to be summoned to the European Championship.
“He could play for any national team. It is because of an extra and non-sport problem that he is not playing. He has been playing for Real Madrid for more than ten years as a starter, and his record is excellent.”
Deschamps previously stated that Benzema has no chance of playing under him for Les Bleues. A blackmailing controversy with Matthieu Valbuena ended his fate as a national team hero, no matter how well he might have played in his club career. Real Madrid’s leading frontman is clearly eager to return but right now, it seems unlikely that his name will be included in the Euro 2020 squad.
