For years, Real Madrid has been trying in vain to get Kylian Mbappe

As PSG prepared to sell the 24-year-old following his choice not to extend his contract, it appeared that their pursuit would finally cease this summer. Real Madrid offered no counteroffers, and Mbappe remained adamant that he wanted to finish out his current deal in Paris, which expires the next year.

It seems doubtful that there will be a late twist given that Mbappe is still in Paris, despite some rumours to the contrary. Mbappe will be a free agent in 2024 as things stand, therefore Real Madrid plans to begin negotiations with him in January and sign a pre-contract with him then.

However, Tomas Gonzalez-Martin says that Los Blancos will turn their focus to Manchester City starlet Erling Haaland if the 2018 FIFA World Cup does not receive a positive response. Real Madrid has also had a long-standing interest in the 23-year-old Norwegian, and the team looked into a transfer for him before he signed with the Cityzens last year.

Haaland had an outstanding debut season with Pep Guardiola’s team, winning the treble, which has elevated him to Ballon d’Or discussion. According to the article, Haaland has a sizable €175 departure clause in his contract that will go into effect the next year and might allow Real Madrid to sign him.

Rafaela Pimenta, the agent for the striker, has always been evasive when asked about the clause’s existence. To stave off any potential suitors, Manchester City is already working on binding the Norwegian goal machine to a new deal. The direction Real Madrid’s search for a star forward will take next summer and whether they will target Mbappe or Haaland remain to be seen.
