Marcelo shocked about lack of Real Madrid contract

Real Madrid captain Marcelo has been recorded expressing his frustration as the club allows him to come off contract

The incident took place during Los Blancos’ last LaLiga Santander game of the season against Real Betis at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on Friday, May 20.

Carlo Ancelotti has repeatedly mentioned the excellent environment in the Real Madrid dressing room in recent months. However, there is one instance where that feeling does not apply.

Marcelo, at 34, has been a key member of Real Madrid for more than a decade and was named club captain following Sergio Ramos’ departure last summer.

However, there is little doubt that he is nearing the end of his career. Last season, Zinedine Zidane started starting teenager Miguel Gutierrez ahead of him at times, while Carlo Ancelotti has rotated him for Ferland Mendy on occasion.

“The club are not going to renew [my contract],” Marcelo is seen saying in a video released by Movistar+.

“I have been a f**king example.”

Marcelo expressed his wish to continue at Real Madrid for another season during the club’s Media Day ahead of Saturday’s Champions League final against Liverpool.

“I want to remain, I’ve stated it 50,000 times,” Marcelo added, “but I’ll talk to the club after the final.”

Florentino Perez proved last summer with Ramos that emotion will not hold him back. Ramos and Real Madrid were expected to finalise a deal last season, but after an injury-plagued season, he was replaced without hesitation. Marcelo has kept his fitness, but with less playing time, it’s unlikely he’ll be able to continue at the Santiago Bernabeu for much longer.
