Isco Alarcon, a former playmaker for Real Madrid, is about to be signed by Real Betis on a free transfer

Los Verdiblancos have quickly overtaken Real Sociedad in the race for the services of the veteran midfielder, 31, and have achieved a significant victory by luring him to the Estadio Benito Villamarin. The former Spain international, according to Fabrizio Romano, has already finished the “main part of his medical” and will shortly sign a one-year contract.

Isco won’t be moving a muscle this summer after spending last season at Betis’ bitter rivals Sevilla and disappearing after only six months with Los Rojiblancos. At the conclusion of the 2021/22 season, the Spaniard broke up a fruitful nine-year partnership and relocated to the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan to revive his career.

However, before Sevilla cancelled his contract in December 2022, he had only made 12 La Liga starts for the club that had won the Europa League an unprecedented number of times without scoring. Isco was on the verge of leaving his native Spain for Union Berlin in January, but the deal fell through at the last minute because the Germans couldn’t afford his salaries. He has spent the entire year of 2023 working alone to stay in shape in expectation of potential offers in the summer, but without concrete offers during the winter.

Isco attracted interest from Sociedad, but he chose Betis to reunite with his old Malaga coach Manuel Pellegrini despite David Silva’s uncertain future in San Sebastian. The agile forward was recruited by Pellegrini to Malaga’s senior team, where he quickly became one of the continent’s most exciting young talents. In 2013, Madrid paid €30 million to sign him.

After several years on the sidelines at the Santiago Bernabeu and an equally unsuccessful period at Sevilla, the 69-year-old boss may be giving his student one final chance to save his La Liga career. It makes sense why Betis sought Isco. He has many traits with Sergio Canales, who last week departed the nation to join Liga MX team Monterrey.
